Welcome to Fluener — a language-learning platform where you can practice languages through live voice rooms, an AI-powered tutor, direct messaging, social connection, and spaced-repetition vocabulary training. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and your rights. By using Fluener (web or mobile), you agree to the practices described here.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Account & Profile Information
When you create an account we collect your name, email address, and profile picture. You may optionally provide a bio, country, target language, and CEFR proficiency level. If you register via Google Sign-In, we receive your name, email, and profile picture from Google; your Google credentials are exchanged for a secure session token and are not stored on our servers.
1.2 Voice & Audio Data
Fluener requests access to your microphone to enable live voice rooms. Audio is streamed in real time between participants using WebRTC peer-to-peer technology. Live voice room audio is never recorded or stored on our servers. Voice messages sent in direct messages are uploaded to and stored on our servers until you or the recipient deletes them. Voice activity detection (VAD) — a real-time speaking/silent indicator — is used solely to power the in-room speaking animation UI.
1.3 Messages & Communication Data
We store the text messages, image attachments, and voice messages you send in direct conversations, along with timestamps, read status, and emoji reactions. This data is retained until deleted by you or when your account is removed.
1.4 Social & Activity Data
We collect data about your social interactions including follow and friend relationships, online presence status, and current voice room participation. This data powers features such as activity indicators and the Connect feed.
1.5 Learning & Progress Data
We store your spaced-repetition vocabulary learning progress, including words studied, session history, and performance scores for the 5,000 most common words. This data is used exclusively to personalise your learning experience.
1.6 Payment Information
If you purchase a Fluener premium subscription, payment details are collected and processed exclusively by our secure third-party payment processor. We do not store your full card number or payment credentials on our servers.
1.7 Device & Technical Data
We collect your device platform (Android / iOS / Web), app version, push notification token, and connection metadata. This information is used to deliver push notifications and diagnose technical issues.
1.8 Usage Data & Cookies
On the web platform we use cookies and similar technologies to maintain your session, remember preferences, and analyse usage patterns to improve the service. You can control cookie preferences through your browser settings.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
• Provide, operate, and improve all Fluener features
• Enable live voice rooms, AI tutoring, direct messaging, and vocabulary training
• Authenticate your identity and manage your account
• Deliver push notifications for messages, room invites, and activity alerts
• Personalise your language learning journey
• Process payments and manage premium subscriptions
• Monitor performance, diagnose errors, and improve reliability
• Enforce our community guidelines and Terms of Service
• Respond to your support requests
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to third parties for their marketing purposes.
3. Microphone & Audio Permissions
Fluener requests microphone access (RECORD_AUDIO on Android, NSMicrophoneUsageDescription on iOS) exclusively to enable participation in live voice rooms. Specifically:
Live voice rooms: Audio is transmitted in real time to other participants via WebRTC. It is never recorded or stored on our servers.
Voice messages: When you record and send a voice message in a direct conversation, the audio file is uploaded to our servers and stored until the message is deleted.
No background recording: The microphone is only active when you are actively participating in a voice room. We do not access the microphone in the background for any other purpose.
4. Third-Party Services
4.1 Google Sign-In
We offer Google OAuth as an optional login method. When you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture. Your Google credentials are not stored — they are exchanged for a Fluener session token upon login. Google Privacy Policy →
4.2 Firebase (Google)
We use Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) to deliver push notifications to Android and iOS devices. Your device token is shared with Firebase solely for this purpose. Firebase Privacy Policy →
4.3 Expo Push Notifications

4.4 WebRTC
Live voice communication in rooms is powered by WebRTC, an open standard for peer-to-peer media. STUN/TURN servers are used solely to establish the connection. Audio data is transmitted directly between participants and is not routed through or stored by Fluener servers.
4.5 Payment Processor
Premium subscription payments are processed by a PCI-compliant third-party payment provider. We do not store your full card details on our servers.
5. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information. We may share information only in the following circumstances:
Service Providers: Third parties who assist us with hosting, payment processing, push notifications, and infrastructure — bound by confidentiality obligations.
Other Users: Your display name, profile picture, online status, and room participation are visible to other Fluener users as part of the social features you choose to use.
Legal Compliance: When required by law, court order, or governmental authority.
Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your data may be transferred. We will notify you before this occurs.
6. Data Storage, Security & Retention
Your data is stored on secure servers protected by industry-standard measures including HTTPS encryption in transit and access controls at rest. Authentication tokens on mobile are stored in your device's secure enclave, inaccessible to other applications.
Retention periods:
• Account and profile data — retained while your account is active
• Messages and voice messages — retained until deleted by you or upon account deletion
• Live voice room audio — never stored; exists only during the session
• Push notification tokens — retained until notifications are disabled or the app is uninstalled
• Learning progress — retained while your account is active
When you delete your account, all associated personal data is permanently removed from our systems within 30 days.
7. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
Correction: Update or correct inaccurate information via account settings.
Deletion: Request permanent deletion of your account and all associated data.
Restriction: Object to or restrict certain processing activities.
Portability: Request your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
Opt-out of notifications: Disable push notifications at any time in your device settings or within the app.

8. Children's Privacy
Fluener is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data without parental consent, please contact us immediately and we will delete the information promptly.
9. International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own. These countries may have data protection laws that differ from those in your jurisdiction. We take appropriate safeguards to ensure your data remains protected in accordance with this Privacy Policy wherever it is processed.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or applicable law. When we do, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. For material changes, we will notify you via email or an in-app notice. Your continued use of Fluener after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
